Abstract
Objectives£ºThe present study was designed to assess the several dimensions of psychomotor performance for evaluation of driving competence in patients with schizophrenia.

Methods£ºWe evaluated psychomotor performance of schizophrenic patients by using the cognitive perceptual assessment for driving (CPAD) which was developed for assessing the driving competence of people with acquired brain injury. Forty-five patients with schizophrenia participated in this study and the results of CPAD were compared with those of 58 control subjects.

Results£ºPsychomotor performances were remarkably decreased in patients with schizophrenia compared with healthy controls in terms of CPAD variables. Among patients, 44.4% passed the CPAD to be regarded as competent to drive, whereas all the controls passed the test.

Conclusion£ºThese results suggest that psychiatrists need to be careful in evaluating the driving competence of schizophrenic patients. Further, the CPAD can be a useful tool for assessing driving-related psychomotor performances in patients with schizophrenia.
